  • 1942 Born on 17th October as the son of Chellamma and Venketachelam Pillai at Perumbavoor.
  • 1962 Took a Diploma from Cochin School of Art
  • 1963-66 Taught at Cochin School of Art
  • 1970 Moved to Chennai as a Freelance Artist
  • 1972 The turning point- did his first ever Mosaic Art of the Risen Lord for a chapel of Salesian Provincialate at Chennai
  • 1972-82 Designed the interiors of several churches in and around Chennai. Acquired fame as an artist and architect of Christian worship centres.
  • 1982 Moved to Bangalore and established his studio, Arte Sacra, near NBCLC
  • 1983 Toured Europe to observe and study more about Christian art and architecture
  • 1984 Realized his dream of setting up a permanent studio, Tapovan, and a training centre for youngsters, Kalakshetra, in a 4 acre plot at Kothanur, off Lingarajapuram (close to Bangalore).
  • 1984-2000 Ardently pursues his passion for perfection and traveled to Sri Lanka, Germany and Papua New Guinea leading to a great deal of demand for his talent.
  • 2000 Bending to his friends’ insistence, finds time from his hectic schedule to build a home for himself and his lifelong pillar of support his sister Ponnammal.
  • 2002 On a fateful January 22nd, Balan passed away in exertion.
