V. Balan, born at Perumbavoor, Kerala, on 17th October 1942 as son of Chellamma and Venketachelam Pillai, was the youngest of four children.He took a diploma from the Cochin School of Art in 1962 and taught there from 1963 to 1966. Divine designs

FOR someone born a Hindu, it is unusual to have taken up Christian theology as a theme. But then V. Balan is one of a kind. Dextrous in painting, designing, sculpting and metal casting, he reaches out for subjects and works which are often shunned by contemporary artists. “It is not that I have been converted to Christianity. I found Christian theology a suitable theme after searching for a long time. Actually, I find divinity in my work,” says the 50-year-old Balan who resides in Bangalore. Continue reading

Christ, the guru on the facade of the Dharmaram Church of the CMI fathers in Bangalore embodies his approach to Christian art, depicting Christ as a teacher. The indianness of sitting posture and colours rendering blend well with the universality Christ image. The mosaic art of Christ, the guru is one of the earliest christian works of Balan; and truly a visionary depiction breathing the air of Vatican ll as early as 1969. Continue reading
